D1 swivel joints

Post by Frobisher » Sat Jun 22, 2013 2:54 pm

How can you tell if your swivel joints have had the post 1998 grease installed? My driver side joint is not leaking (or maybe it's done and all dried up inside...) but there is a chocolate brown drip coming off the passenger side joint. I've started hearing a chirping sound like somebody needs a little lube, and the occasional click that sounds like a CV joint heading for the sunset.

Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Remove the fill plug on the swivel housing and insert your pinky. If your pinky comes back black and greasy, it has the modern one-shot grease. If it comes back oily, then it still has gear oil in it. If your pinky is dry, then so is the swivel joint...

Unless it has the one-shot grease, it would be a good idea to change the oil in the swivels. There is a small plug to drain the old oil, then you just fill the swivels with 90wt gear oil until it runs out the fill plug hole.

Grease is in and nothing's leaking out. I love it when a plan comes together.
