Manifold bolt replacement

Post by Frobisher » Wed Jan 28, 2015 9:59 pm

The bolts,on the driver side exhaust manifold keep loosening, and I discovered they're missing the special locking washer Land Rover uses.

So, can I replace the bolts with grade 8 bolts, loctite or anti-seize, and star or locking washers? Or am I better off replacing with original bolts, etc?

For now, I keep tightening them every few weeks. Thanks.

Are we talking the bolts that keep the manifold on the head, or the bolts that connect the manifold to the downpipe?

The head bolts. The passenger side has special locking washers; the driver side does not.

Interesting. I usually encounter bolts that refuse to loosen, not insist on it...

Another option is to go racer-style: drill the bolt heads and safety-wire them.

Maybe they're Puritan brand bolts and they just want to leave anything English.

As for drilling the heads, that sounds a whole lot harder than swapping out for new. Cool, but hard.

You could always buy pre-drilled bolts...
